Είναι πολυετές φυτό της οικογενείας των Ζιγκιβεριδών (Zingiberaceae).Ανήκει στην ίδια οικογένεια με τον κουρκουμά και είναι γνωστό ως ‘λευκό turmeric’ δηλαδή λευκός κουρκουμάς. Η ρίζα του φυτού τριμμένη, προστίθεται σε μείγμα curry. Το εσωτερικό της ρίζας είναι λευκό και η γεύση της είναι παρόμοια με της πιπερόριζας, λίγο πιο πικρή.
